Bringing History to Life
Although I have always considered myself a proud Scot I have lived for over 50 years in Guernsey, and consider myself lucky to be able to call the island home. I have a longheld fascination with Guernsey and Herm’s fabulous and varied history, and all of the marvellous, and at times scandalous, characters that have called these islands home.
Walk 1 St Peter Port Town Church
A look at the history of the old church, originally called ‘Sancti Petri du Porto Mari’, how St Peter Port looked at the time of the building of the church, its destruction and rebuilding, and with a guided tour of the exterior and interior of the Church, and a look at some of the interesting memorials. The tour takes around one hour.
Walk 2 Explore the history and and gems of Herm Island.
A walk around the island of Herm, exploring the history of this lovely island and some of the interesting characters who have called it home, from monks to smugglers, and writers to Princes.
The tour takes around 2.5 hours.
Walk 3 Old St Peter Port
A walk around the old alleys, steps and hills of the islands ancient capital parish, exploring times gone by, and walking in the footsteps of some of the islands fascinating former residents. The tour ytakes around 1.5 hours.
Special Interest
I have a longtime association with the Priaulx Library Research Institute, Guernsey’s first and foremost islands studies centre, having served for fourteen years on the Friends of the Priaulx Library in support of the library, with the last four years as President. Five years ago I was elected to the Library Council, the body that oversees the running of the library and the management of the staff and resources. For the past three years I have served as one of three Trustees and Chair of the Library Council.
